March 14 Gardening…

I’ve been away from home for a few days and got back this afternoon and started planting.

First thing my Mom told me when I stepped out into the backyard was that our Zygopetalum Orchid opened it’s first bloom. This made me really happy. We purchased this as a bare root Orchid at the Pacific Orchid Expo three years ago.

First Zygopetalum Blooms

I purchased a Asiatic Lily called Tango Blend from OSH in El Cerrito. There was an spot in the front yard filled with weeds, so I removed what I can, added new soil and planted all six bulbs. I also planted some Agrostemma in clusters here and in two other locations in our front yard.

I planted two of the three Pepino Dulce into 5 gallon pots which will be placed in the front yard. Here, they will get full sun and hopefully produce a lot of fruits. I’ll plant the third one into the SFG soon.

In a continuing effort to incorporate veggies into our front yard, I planted all the Swiss Chard ‘Bright Lights’ seedlings into the two big clay pots, which now has the Sweet Peas and Agrostemmas. I think this will make a nice and colorful filler for the pot and also provide some veggies!

We purchased a total of five Orchids at the 2011 Pacific Orchid Exposition. All of these are cool weather Orchids and will be living in our backyard patio.

POE 2011 Purchases

– Cymbidium Sleeping Beauty ‘Inca Gold’
– Dendrobium White Grace ‘Sato’
– Cymbidium Sweetheart ‘Elegance’
– Epidendrum Wedding Valley ‘Sakura’
– Epidendrum Wedding Valley ‘Yukimai’

Eye-Fi Pro X2

When I purchased my Canon EOS 60D. I just splurged and decided to get a new Eye-Fi card with it. It’s a bit pricey, but I thought it would be worth it, because it automatically uploads the photos from my camera to my computer once it detects our WiFi network (and any other WiFi network I set the card up with).

Eye-Fi Pro X2

It also geotags the photos, although I’m not sure how accurate it is. So far the geotagging info has been pretty accurate.

In addition to all that, the Eye-Fi software can upload the photos to various sharing site. In my case, the photos are uploaded to a private folder on my Flickr account.

Kales Sprouting + New Snap and Sweet Peas Seeds…

Sprouting Dinosaur and White Russian Kale

Just a few days after sowing, the Dinosaur Folia and White Russian Folia Kales are sprouting.

Super Sugar Snap Pea vs Early Gigantea Sweet Pea

I also found some Super Sugar Snap Peas seeds Folia as wells as Sweet Pea ‘Early Gigantea Mixed Colors’ seeds Folia as OSH in El Cerrito.

I soaked 16 Snap Peas Folia and 12 Sweet Peas Folia seeds in water and will plant them out either Monday or Tuesday.

The 2010-2011 Overwintering Coleus Project Begins…

We got the first rain a few days ago… and it’s starting to get a little bit cooler… so that means I have to start thinking about getting cuttings from my Coleus to overwinter. To tell you the truth, I don’t like overwintering my Coleus because it’s a lot of work and it take up room in my bedroom (and I don’t have that much room to spare). I use to have a lots of window space at work (see photo below), but since I quit, I am force to keep all my cuttings at home.

Lotsa Gardening Going On…

My Coleus hunt continues… I went to Mid City Nursery and picked up three more Coleus:
Coleus ‘Henna’
Coleus ‘Dipt in Wine’
Coleus ‘Glennis’

Me and my Mom are clearing Veggie Bed #2. I’m pulling up the old Kale Dwarf Blue Curled and my Mom is gathering up the river rock mulch. I’ll add some compost and potting soil to raise back the soil, then figure out what to plant next. Most likely Tomatoes and Pepper and maybe a Potato.

I planted 4 more Coleus pots today…

Coleus Pot #7:
Coleus ‘Swallowtail’
Coleus ‘Rustic Orange’
Coleus ‘Dipt in Wine’

Coleus Pot #8:
Coleus ‘Chocolate Mint’
Coleus ‘Sunset Strip’
Coleus ‘Snazzy’

Coleus Pot #9:
Coleus ‘Molten Lava’
Coleus ‘Henna’
Coleus ‘Lava Rose’

Coleus Pot #10:
Coleus ‘Florida Sun Jade’
Coleus ‘Indian Summer’
Coleus ‘Glennis’

Sweet Peas in the backyard are pretty much spent so I’m collecting the seedpods and chopping them down…

Working in the garden with a Citronella candle to ward of the mosquitos

My Oriental Limelight Artemisia is growing way to big and overshadowing the Orange Fuz Geranium growing the the same pot, so I cut some of its canes down to make some room for the Geranium to get more light. I also removed a bunch of dead leaves from the bottom part of the Artemisia. I think they’ll be ok for now, but I’ll probably separate them come fall.

I was cutting some of the old Red Texas Star Hibiscus stem off and noticed a couple tiny blue balls in the Mondo Grass growing in the same pot. I think it’s the Mondo Grass seedpod… It really cool, but it’s too dark to take a photo of it right now. I’ll do that tomorrow…

There are currently 4 Red Texas Star Hibiscus growing. These have never bloomed, so I’m wondering if I should pot it up to a bigger pot…

I accidentally knocked over the Euphorbia genoudiana pot, so I potted it up into it’s new permanent home…

Vietnamese Coriander + Kangkong + Kalanchoe tubiflora…

I was shopping at 99 Ranch Market and found Rau Ram aka Vietnamese Coriander (Persicaria odorata) (bottom left photo) which I recognized as a Polygonum because of its stem & chevron on the leaf. I bought it, but didn’t intending to eat it, but to plant and add to my Polygonum collection.

Purchased Persicaria odorata Kalanchoe tubiflora in Bloom

I also bought some Kangkong aka Water Spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) to make Adobong Kang Kong and also try to plant/root the stems.

My Kalanchoe tubiflora (Chandelier Plant) (top right photo) grown from tiny plantlets 4 years ago is now blooming. I didn’t even know that these bloomed.

New Croton

New Croton

I never had good luck with Crotons, but I saw this one in a 3 inch pot at Ikea and decided to give it another try… but this time, I’m going to grow it at work.
