Books + Videos

Our city library was renovating, so I haven’t been able to check stuff out. I check it tonight and they were open… so, yeay, I got some books:

– How Plants Get Their Names by L.H.Bailey
– Japanese Gardens in a Weekend by Robert Ketchell
– Creating Water Gardens by Ortho Books
– The Complete Book of Cacti & Succulents by Terry Hewitt
– Western Garden Annual 1994 Edition by the Sunset Editors

I also noticed that they had videos and DVDs, so I checked them out and to my surprise, there were garden videos (under 635). I was doublely excited when I found tapes of a series that I’ve been looking for:

– Gardening Naturally – Getting Started
– Gardening Naturally – Preparing for Spring

Both with Barbara Damrosch and Elliot Coleman. I recorded these way back when it aired on PBS (I think). Well, a coworker borrow it and lost it!!! I’ve been hoping I run into it on TV, but I’ve never seen it since… ’til now.

Cactus Book…

One of the gifts I received from Christmas was “Cactus: The Most Beautiful Species and Their Care” by Elisabeth Manke. Thanks Howie :)

4 More Books…

I borrow four more books from the library:

– Sunset – Western Garden Annual, 2000 Edition
– Reader’s Digest – The One-Hour Garden by Joanna Smith
– Ortho Books – Complete Guide to Vegetables, Fruits & Herbs
– Ortho Books – All About Pruning by Judy Lowe

Back to daily postings :)

I returned some library books and checked out two more:

– Sunset Pruning Handbook
– Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening

Recently we’ve been harvesting a lot of pears, peaches and prunes. Today I harvested more Sweet 100’s and Lemon Cucumbers.

Italian Prunes

I also planted four types of seeds into newspaper pots: Grand Rapids Lettuce, Calabrese Broccoli, Catskill Brussels Sprouts and Jewel Mixed Colors Nasturtium.

The seeds I planted on the 12th are doing well and I thinned them down to a couple few.

I had a few failures though… The Correnta Hybrid Spinach I planted on the 13th, looked well, but when I transplanted them a few days ago, they just died :(… Also, the Ginger rhizomes that I tried to root on the 12th got moldly and shriveled up :(…

Monday…

I went to the library again and got five books:

– Propagation Basics by Steven Bradley
– Plant Propagation A to Z by Geoff Bryant
– Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates by Robert Kourik
– Rodale’s Successful Organic Gardening Vegetables by Patricis Michalak
– Gardening 101 by Martha Stewart

I transplanted my overwintered Coleus Wizard Rose triplets into a bigger pot. Here’s the clippings before and after. (The parent plant and more cuttings are in my July 8th entry right above the hula guy.)

Before (June 3)

After (July 11)

Here’s some pics from the garden:

Tendergreen Bush Bean

Chater’s Double Hollyhock

…and for dinner, we finally had that Yellow Submarine Cucumber, which at 10 inches long and 3 inch diameter, was still young (seeds were still soft)

More Gardening Books…

Right after work, I stopped by the library and check out more books:

– A World of Flowers by Clay Perry
– Decorate You Garden by Mary Keen
– Gardening Basics by Ken Beckett, Steve Bradley, Noel Kingsbury and Tim Newbury
– The New Victory Garden by Bob Thomson
– The Essential Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson

New Library Card…

Today after work, I went to the city library and signed up for a new card. I wanted to see their selection of garden and landscaping books. I got four books to read during my commute and free time:

– Rodale’s Weekend Gardener by Erin Hynes
– The Frugal Gardener by Catriona Tudor Erler
– Succulents for the Comtemporary Garden by Yvonn Cave
– The Cottage Garden by Christopher LLoyd with Richard Bird

Once I got home, I checked the Sunflower bed to make sure bugs or snails didn’t chew it all up. It looked fine.

I also planted 3 pots of various Coleus and placed them in the front patio.
