3 Ornamental Grass Plantings

Tuesday, June 6, 2006

I planted three of the Ornamental Grasses seeds that I found:
– Purple Fountain Grass (from Costco) ( seed photo )
– Unknown California Rush-like Grass (from shopping center on Mini Dr. & Sonoma Blvd.) ( seed photo )
– Unknown Japanese Rush-like Grass ( from Sears parking lot at the Tanforan Mall in Daly City) ( seed photo )

I also cut down my Coleus ‘Dragon Black’ because it was getting too top heavy and infested with mealy bugs. I’m rerooting the two tops it had in water and will repot once I see roots.

I wanted to take the day off but my boss already took the day off, so I went to work and it was so dead. I spent a good part of the day going through some of my unorganized photos, deleting duplicates and blurry ones… I usually take multiple shot per subject to ensure at least one being focused correctly.

Once I got home, I went through the whole garden and took a whole lotta photos since it was still fairly bright outside. I noticed that the flamingo flower and siberian iris have started to bloom.

I then did some maintenance, pulling up weeds and overgrown plants being careful to to get the newly emerged ladybugs.

I hope I can take half a day off tomorrow so I can start preparing my bed for new borders-not a task I’m looking forward to doing, but something I really need to do so I can start planting in them.

Wish List: Butterfly Clerodendrum

Clerodendrum ugandense (Butterfly Clerodendrum or Blue Glory Bower) ( DG PlantFile )

I saw a a photo of it’s flower on patchoullijulie‘s journal and fell in love.

Wish List: Fritillaria verticillata

I saw this on one of wendymerle’s photos. I love the patterns on the interior of the flower.

Nanay’s Amaryllis…

My Mom is so excited that her Amaryllis is finally blooming. Once it opened she told me to whip out my camera and take a photo of it! :)

The blossom spans about 7 inches wide and 8 inches heigh.

*Nanay means Mom or Mother in Tagalog.

Planting Til The Sun Goes Down…

Once I got home, I hurried to plant some pots before it got too late. This is what I planted:

Coleus pot #13: (The orange pot) ‘Sedona’, ‘Rustic Orange’ and ‘Copper Splash’
Coleus pot #14: ‘Purple Oak’
Coleus pot #15: ‘Pineapple Prince’ and ‘Pineapple’
Coleus pot #16: ‘Alabama Sunset’
Coleus pot #17: ‘Amora’

and 2 more non-Coleus pots, but I’m spacing and can’t think of the combinations. I’ll check tommorrow…

This Weekend…

My Mom woke me up on Saturday morning so we can go to the Vallejo Pista sa Nayon–a Filipino Cultural Festival. Before we left I had to do a bit of gardening.

I checked the seeds that I sowed on Thursday and was surprised that some are sprouting. All of the Zinnias in fact… after only 2 days.

I also took 12 cuttings of the Lamium I bought last month and planted them in one of the 12-pack Mini Greenhouse. Once these grow a bit, I want to place them in various pots to act as fillers and spillers… I also potted the Jerusalem Sage that I snagged on Friday.

We then went to Vallejo Pista sa Nayon. It was hot and although I had a baseball hat on, my neck was getting burned, so I bought a “Salakot” hat which made me look like I worked the rice fields. More Pista sa Nayon photos on Flickr.

The exciting part for me was seeing a booth that had a raffle. It’s not that raffles excite me, but one of the prizes was an orchid!… I ended up winning a religious book, but my Mom got the winning ticket for the orchid. This is what she won:

Orchid

I’m not sure what the cultivar is… I’ll have to do some research.

My best friend came down from Reno and we did a nursery tour. He’s starting his garden design business and wanted to get some plants for some of his clients… as well as visit his good friends down here.

We went to Annie’s Annuals and Perennials in Richmond and I bought 5 plants:

Wish List: Brazilian Oxalis ‘Silver and Gold’

I just saw someone posting a photo of this Oxalis that doesn’t look like any other Oxalis I’ve ever seen.

12-pack Mini Greenhouses + Jerusalem Sage + Peppermint-scented Geranium

I woke up late again and drove to work… so after work, I went back to Big Lots and got me some more 12-pack Mini Greenhouses.

By the time I was driving home, the sun was setting and the sky was beautiful, so drove back to Sandpiper Point to see if I can take a photo of the sunset, but I was about 5 minutes too late. (I haven’t gone back there since the pit-bull incident.)

I went to see if I could spot the Jerusalem Sage I wanted… I found it and took a couple of sprigs of it to try to root. I hope they take.

In other news… I’ve been asking people on Dave’s Garden for help identifying some of my unknown plant photos. One that I was please to learn was a Peppermint-scented Geranium from Filbert Steps. Now I totally want to see if they do smell like Peppermint. I also want to ask the owner if I could have some cuttings.
