You know you’re a gardener when you take a day off of work to work on your garden.

I Just Gotta Do What I Can!
Sometimes I feel like I have so much plant and gardening projects going on, that I don’t have time for it all.
For example I’ve been wanting to build up two of the three garden beds in the back yard, but haven’t had the chance to. I still have bolting Swiss Chard and radishes and I have not amended the soil.
I just checked the planting chart I have pinned to my wall, and I think I am still okay to plant vegetables for the summer. Maybe I’m just getting anxious with the little time I have after work… or maybe I’m getting discouraged when I see fully grown tomatoes and peppers in the stores, when the one that I planted from seeds are still little… but I just checked mine and they have continued to grow since I took them outside. So maybe I’m just stressing over nothing.
My Mom just reminded me that she found the scions that I got in January. Oh my! I thought they were dead… but some are still buds, some are a little bit open and some that sprouted are dried up and dead… but all of them don’t seem dried out. I’m still going to try to graft these even thought it’s late. Who knows…
Anyways, I was going to complain more, but I see that I just have to do what I can and learn from it. I think I have to ask for a few days off to tend to the garden :)
BTW, remember the tomato seedlings that I cut and rooted because they looked like they were dying?.. Well, I just check them and they have really bounced back and look much more full of GREEN leaves than the seedlings that I didn’t cut.
Also, remember the Pineapple we got about a week and a half ago… I placed the Pineapple top in water and it has started to show signs of roots!!! YEAY!
OK… I’m tired… I must get ready for bed…
Afternoon Walk…
This morning (Tuesday) on my way to work, I took an alternate route to check on the Coleus that I had my eye out for. The one in the bank window planter and guess what??!!! They totally replaced all the plants with new ones!!!! That pretty Coleus is GONE!!! :( :( :(
I was upset for two reasons. (1) I should have taken a snip of that Coleus when I had the chance. (2) They pulled that pretty Coleus before it reached it’s peak!!!
Needless to say, I decided to take a walk around our district for lunch since it was a warm day… (and subconsciously, I was hoping I would see another Coleus)
Here are some photos from my walk:
I have more on my May 16, 2006 Flickr page. I also have a lot of unknown plants, so if you are up for an ID’ing challenge, please come by :)
And lastly, as I was walking to carpool, I saw Larry, Darryl and Darryl:
Unknown Weed Part 2
A couple days ago, I asked if anyone know what this unknown weed was that I saw underneath a street tree.
You Can Now Zoom Into My Flickr Photos…
One of my coworkers told me that he was not able to zoom into my photos on flickr, which I thought was weird because I could.
We figured out that flickr has a setting to disable the “All Sizes” button, so I turned that setting off and now everyone can zoom into all my flickr photos…
Try this one (Click the “All Sizes” button on top of the photo):
Coleus ‘Pineapple’
I was inspired by lblanchard‘s recent entry to upload a photo of my Coleus ‘Pineapple’ from last year. Unfortunately, this did not survive overwintering.
Unknown Weed + New Cuttings
As I was walking to the carpool from work, I saw this weed underneath a street tree and thought is was cool, so I took a few cutting of it to try to root.
The stems are reddish brown and slightly hairy. The main stem seems semi-woody, since I could not pinch it off. Anyone know what this is?
SOLVED: This is White Snakeroot ‘Chocolate’ (Eupatorium rugosum) ( DG PlantFile )
Here is a close up of the leaves.
I’m also trying to root these other two cuttings I got:
top: Unknown Weed (from above)
left: Perilla Magilla ‘Vanilla’
right: Euonymus Fortunei Radicans ‘Harlequin’ (Bigleaf Winter Creeper)
Here is a photo of the Taro and Ginger I planted earlier this morning.
And finally, Calli wants to show you a new trick:
Afterwords, she discovers Marty inside the house.
Late Night Planting (Again)…
I woke up in the middle of the night… or should I say very early morning… and left like planting.
I planted four more Taro sprouts I found, along with two Ginger sprouts. Hopefully, the Ginger will grow and not die like the previous ones.
I also cut the Forsythia right below where the roots have formed and replanted them, this time giving them more space and only putting two in each pot.
A few of my cuttings have these ugly looking white/beige bugs that kinda looks like tiny little long oval dinner rolls. They have a white web thing surrounding them. I tried to hand pick them, but I don’t think I can get all of them. Some are about 1/8 of an inch, but many are just 1/16 of a inch or smaller.
